Here at New Life Church we will be hosting the Dirt Conference on November 10-11 in Little Rock, Arkansas. I have hinted at Dirt before but if you still don’t know what it is…

Dirt is a creative approach to showing churches that big ideas and big change don’t always mean big budget. As much as that’s the script we’re supposed to tell people, that’s really what we want to see happen. Everyone on staff here and everyone teaching labs will be there to help you understand what you can do better with what you already have. Nobody is going to tell you that you need a font budget, or you must replace all your Macs with PCs (although it wouldn’t hurt). We just want to inspire the creative MacGyverness to get you where you want to be.

So here’s the latest Dirt Promo featuring a few people you may have heard of…

If you are in creative arts at a church or not, you will want to be here. The talent we have coming is so very top-of-the-line I guarantee whether you’re in video, graphics, live production, music, you will absolutely learn something.

And, since I am officially the employee of the month for August 2009, nobody is more qualified to do so (and yes, that is a real award).

The award was given to me this month mostly because I was an idiot and climbed in a tree covered in poison something during a video shoot to get a shot. It was bad…like wrist to elbow completely covered bad…so I guess they felt the need to make it up to me. That shoot was for a women’s event promo which Neil and I are working on now which I will show you all when we release them.

We have been incredibly busy this month so there are a lot of videos I could show you which is why I have created an awesome Videos page which I will keep updated with our latest endeavors. Of particular note are:

Etheopia Missions Video
Life Group Launch
Website Launch Teaser

And speaking of new website…we have also been building a new website with the help of the amazing Joe Hohman (and by that I mean he’s been building and we’re just sitting back and watching in amazement). So here’s to a full month of videos and another crazy month ahead.

So I mentioned Dirt Conference (even more specifics later) in passing in my last post, well here is the official promo. Just one of the things I’ve had the chance to work on while in Arkansas.

I made it in After Effects over the weekend and some in the van on the way to North Carolina for the ARC All Access Conference. It was a good 13+ hour drive but it was a great trip all around.

The video is a pretty simple idea that looks really sharp. If you’re the AE type and would also like all the project files just to tinker (minus the end…it was too big) it is linked below. Enjoy!

At WFFC our media team is myself and two other regular volunteers. Being part time and on a schedule of zero weeks ahead of time for sermons and most other things it’s hard to nail everything just right and it seems like nothing is ever really ready for prime time.

So, to make sure everything is good enough for production we put it through about a minute of scrutiny. There’s no fail proof way to make sure everything is 100% but we bounce things off each other when we can either over IM, email, or in person. It always helps a lot to get an outside perspective on anything. I’d like to use the Church Marketing Lab more often but there’s just no time.

So working for a smallish church we have to work on the cheap most of the time. The internet is full of awesome tips on how to do things cheap as free…or sometimes just cheap. In this case, for only $14.

The $14 Steadycam is a pretty decent solution for anyone without massive dollar signs flooding their annual budget. Although it may be better for use with smaller cameras, we use it with our HDR-FX1 and it is not bad.

Anyone else tried this project?

You want to talk about pandemonium? Well welcome to Word of Faith Family Church. I’ve been meaning to jump on this I & P bandwagon becuase i’ve learned some neat tricks from others and I know we’re all about jerry rigging ’round here. So for my first entry I would like to would like to explain how we show a video in our sanctuary.

Our set up is very basic here. We have one PC running Sunday Plus (and yes, it is horrible) connected via long VGA cable to our projector. No video mixer, no second video source. So how do we show a video. Well, there is no smooth way with Sunday Plus because although it does technically have video capability, it’s about as reliable as a Fiat.

So the best we can do is VLC media player. Using the nVidia drivers, it clones the video over to the second screen. No, it’s not pretty, but it works about 95% of the time (still an unacceptable number). So when I press play on this video in about 5 minutes I will be praying it works…

So today Bobby and I came up to Granger Community Church in Granger, IN for the Maximizing Media Workshop. We both were busy last night an tonight so we have to make the 4.5 hour trip twice (which means we left at 3:30am to get here at 8am). So although we’re quite tired I’m sure we’ll learn plenty and hopefully post it here. So keep your finger over that refresh button because we’re wired on energy drinks and kickin’ it on free Wi-Fi.
